What is an Insulating Glass Unit?
Insulating Glazing Units (IG Units) are a multipurpose glass construction of two or more glass lites hermetically sealed together to achieve an effective vacuum. This "sandwiched" air space is what enhances the IGU's noise mitigation properties and prevents unwanted heat loss or gain. Metal spacers set the plies of glass apart at an optimal distance while ensuring an airtight seal around the unit's perimeter. These spacers are filled with a desiccant--a beaded substance that absorbs visible moisture in the vacuum, thus guaranteeing the unit's unobstructed transparency.
IG Units, or "double insulated glass," are becoming more sophisticated, and the demand for custom insulated glazing composed of different tints and coatings is on the rise.
