Masking Structure, Elevating Facades, Defining the Modern Building Exterior
Glasswerks offers a full range of opaque glass products designed to create seamless, uniform building exteriors while concealing internal structure, floors, and mechanical systems. Whether specified for curtain walls, wall cladding, storefronts, or fixed windows, our spandrel and back-painted glass delivers a clean, all-glass aesthetic across a wide variety of architectural applications.
Frit is finely-ground glass mixed with colored pigments that is chemically fused to the glass surface through a high-heat tempering process. One side of the glass is coated or silkscreened with frit, then heated to nearly 1,150°F, permanently bonding the coating to the glass surface. The result is a hard, durable, light-blocking finish that will not peel, fade, or delaminate over time.
- Permanently fused to the glass — not a film or laminate
- Incredibly durable, colorfast, and fade resistant
- Environmentally friendly materials and process
- Available in a wide range of colors, patterns, and styles
- Frequently used as a component in insulating glass units (IGU)
Silicone OPACICOAT 300® Spandrel uses a water-based liquid silicone rubber applied to any glass substrate by spraying, roll coating, or curtain coating — no heat required. This makes it a flexible option compatible with both annealed and heat-treated glass. Once dry, the coating forms a rubber-like film that bonds tightly to the glass surface for long-lasting opacity.
- No heat required during application
- Compatible with annealed and heat-treated glass substrates
- Available with fallout certification, holding glass fragments in place in the event of breakage
- Can be applied to virtually any glass substrate
- Flexible, rubber-like finish once cured
Both ceramic frit and silicone spandrel glass are engineered for long-term performance in demanding architectural applications.

Spandrel spandrel glass is most commonly used where a seamless, all-glass appearance is desired while concealing internal building structure, mechanical systems, floor slabs, and insulation.
